We are self organizing. Go away. We have power, and... we are corrupted.
A self-organizing team is a unicorn. The self organization is more often than not used as an excuse to keep management away and avoid difficult questions. Even if you have an extraordinary team, well trained and really experienced, it is not self organizing. The strongest person in the group organizes it, adjusting the work way to his/her taste. That means that depending on the natural leader type (Pioneer, Settler or Town planner) following scenarios are possible:
- the natural leader is of Pioneer type and is excellent at getting the project off the ground. But don't be fooled. The project, without changing the speed, will crash. The Pioneer is just not capable of building a product in a way it should be build. A strong preference of doing things instead of doing things right will get you something that can be called a 'prototype'. But you certainly do not want to pay for the maintenance!
- the natural leader is of Settler type. The team will burn a lot of time doing things it should not in the initial phase of development, and probably will never complete the project. The maintenance will be expensive but manageable. Consider yourself lucky.
- the natural leader is of Town planner type. The project will be canceled. The team will analyze all possible exception, bad paths and risks, and will lose stamina before building the MVP (which they will not build anyway, as building half-baked solutions is for losers only). The good news is that if you accept the development costs, you will get a really nice product that may have no users. But it is a success, at least technically.
